Dr. Deepali Dewan & Dr. Deborah Hutton talk about their research and insights into Raja Deen Dayal (1844-1905), known as India’s Prince of Photographers, putting his life and art into context against the backdrop of 19th century India and revealing his role in fashioning a new identity for the emerging nation.

ROM Curator Dr. Deepali Dewan is an art historian with a special interest in the visual cultures of South Asia, and author of Embellished Reality: Indian Painting Photographs. Dr. Deborah Hutton is Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at The College of New Jersey, and author of The Art of the Court of Bijapur. They are co-authors of a major new book, Raja Deen Dayal: Artist-Photographer in Nineteenth-Century India, which will be launched at this event.
